The acclaimed director pushes his directorial skills with this innovative paranormal narrative captured wholly from the perspective of the spirit. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their fresh home, the lens – AKA the Presence – follows them around. The Black Phone Horror
Derrickson's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a continuation. Set in 1978 Denver, multiple kidnappings has rendered the local kids anxious. After Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and held captive in a dungeon, he dreads a fatal end. But the disconnected phone on the wall repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators offering help, as the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, on Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the conflict between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for materialism in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky biopic of the disgraced televangelist and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield plays the venal Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals set about capitalizing on the people's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, overdone appearance and bad faith, however Chastain succeeds to present the character in a likable light. Next Tuesday, early morning, Film4
