Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using these drugs must be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the medication explain a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you become ravenous," described an individual.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
