Seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left group stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
