Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress After Wave of Online Abuse Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the journey.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
